IVF in Spain
Last updated: December 2025
Spain does more egg donation cycles than any other country in Europe. If you need donor eggs, this is where most fertility doctors would point you.
Why Spain
Three things set Spain apart:
- Anonymous donation. Donors are anonymous by law. No identity disclosure, ever. This attracts more donors than countries with open-ID rules, which means no waiting lists.
- Clinic infrastructure. Barcelona and Madrid have 50+ fertility clinics each. Many were built from the ground up for international patients. English-speaking staff, airport transfers, accommodation partnerships.
- Liberal laws. No embryo limit for transfer (though most clinics follow ESHRE guidelines), PGT-A allowed, embryo freezing standard. Single women and same-sex female couples can access all treatments.
Costs
| Treatment | Price Range |
|---|---|
| IVF (own eggs) | €4,000–€6,000 |
| IVF (donor eggs) | €5,500–€9,000 |
| ICSI | €4,500–€6,500 |
| Egg freezing | €2,500–€4,000 |
| IUI | €800–€1,500 |
Medication is extra: budget €800–€2,000 per cycle. Some clinics offer all-inclusive packages. Always ask what’s included before comparing prices.
Top Cities
Barcelona
The largest fertility hub in Spain. Home to IVI Barcelona (part of the IVIRMA network, the biggest fertility group in the world), Eugin (now part of Fresenius), and Institut Marques. Most clinics here have dedicated international patient departments.
Madrid
IVI Madrid, Clinica Tambre, and FIV Madrid are the standouts. Slightly cheaper than Barcelona for the same quality. Less tourist infrastructure but more local feel.
Valencia
Where IVIRMA started. Home to their original research lab. Good option if you want the headquarters experience rather than a satellite clinic.
Alicante & Malaga
Growing as fertility tourism hubs. Clinics like IVF Spain (Alicante) specifically target British and Scandinavian patients. Lower cost of living means cheaper accommodation while you’re there.
The Law
- Egg donation: Legal, anonymous, compensated (donors receive ~€1,000)
- Sperm donation: Legal, anonymous
- Embryo donation: Legal
- Surrogacy: Illegal
- PGT-A/PGT-M: Legal
- Gender selection: Illegal (except for medical reasons)
- Single women: Full access to all treatments
- Same-sex female couples: Full access
- Age limit: None by law; clinics typically cap at 50
What to Watch Out For
- Success rate claims. Some clinics quote pregnancy rates (positive test) rather than live birth rates. Always ask for live birth rates, broken down by age group.
- Package pricing. “All-inclusive” sometimes excludes medication, ICSI, or embryo freezing. Get the full breakdown in writing.
- Multiple cycles. Budget for 2–3 cycles. Multi-cycle discount packages (often 10–20% off) are common and worth asking about.
Getting There
Most patients do 2 trips: one for initial consultation and tests (1–2 days), one for egg retrieval and transfer (5–7 days). Some clinics offer remote monitoring. You do scans with your local gynaecologist and only fly out for the procedure.
