IVF in Greece
Last updated: December 2025
Greece is the most permissive country in Europe for fertility treatment. IVF up to age 54 with donor eggs. Legal surrogacy. No embryo limits. If your own country says no, Greece probably says yes.
Why Greece
- Liberal laws. The highest age limit in Europe (54 for donor eggs). Surrogacy is legal and regulated. Embryo freezing unlimited. PGT-A allowed.
- Cost. 30–40% cheaper than Spain for similar treatment quality. Athens clinics charge €3,000–€5,000 for IVF, compared to €4,000–€6,000 in Barcelona.
- Surrogacy. Greece is one of three EU countries (along with UK and Portugal with restrictions) where gestational surrogacy is legal. It requires court authorisation and a medical indication, but the process is well-established.
Costs
| Treatment | Price Range |
|---|---|
| IVF (own eggs) | €3,000–€5,000 |
| IVF (donor eggs) | €4,500–€7,000 |
| ICSI | €3,500–€5,500 |
| Egg freezing | €2,000–€3,500 |
| Surrogacy (total) | €30,000–€50,000 |
Medication is extra: €700–€1,800 per cycle. Greek pharmacies are cheaper than Western European ones.
Top Clinics
Athens
- Embryolab. Technically in Thessaloniki, but worth mentioning first. One of the most internationally recognised Greek fertility clinics. ISO-certified lab.
- Institute of Life (IASO). Part of the IASO hospital group, one of Greece’s largest private healthcare providers. Strong egg donation programme.
- Eugonia. Boutique clinic with a good reputation among expats. English-speaking throughout.
- Mitera Hospital IVF Unit. Part of the Hygeia Group. Hospital-based, which some patients prefer for the medical backup.
Thessaloniki
- Embryolab. Their flagship. Purpose-built facility, large donor pool, strong lab team. Popular with patients from the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia.
- Interbalkan Medical Centre IVF. Hospital-affiliated, good for patients who want everything under one roof.

Surrogacy in Greece
This deserves its own section because it’s rare in Europe. Here’s how it works:
- Court application. You need a court order before starting. The intended mother must be under 54 and have a medical reason she can’t carry (e.g., absent uterus, repeated implantation failure).
- Surrogate requirements. Must be a Greek resident, under 50, with at least one child of her own. No genetic connection to the child (gestational only).
- Compensation. Surrogates receive “reasonable expenses”. In practice €10,000–€15,000. Commercial surrogacy is technically illegal, but the expense framework is well-understood.
- Legal parentage. The intended parents are the legal parents from birth. No adoption process needed.
The total cost including clinic fees, legal fees, surrogate compensation, and medication runs €30,000–€50,000. Still cheaper than US surrogacy by a factor of 3–4.
What to Watch Out For
- Island clinics. Some smaller clinics on the islands market themselves as “fertility holidays.” The quality varies. Stick to Athens or Thessaloniki for your actual treatment.
- Age limit enforcement. The 54-year age limit is a legal maximum, but many clinics set their own lower limits based on medical assessment.
- Summer scheduling. Some clinics reduce capacity in August. Plan accordingly.
