IVF in Cyprus
Last updated: January 2026
One island, two countries, two regulatory regimes, two price brackets. The Republic of Cyprus (south) is an EU member state with formal ART legislation. North Cyprus (TRNC) operates outside EU jurisdiction with looser rules and lower prices. Both offer anonymous egg donation. Both treat international patients. Understanding which side you’re on matters more here than in any other fertility destination.
The Split
Republic of Cyprus (South)
EU member. Governed by Law 69(I)/2015, the first consolidated MAR legislation in the country. This means EU tissue and cell directives apply. Clinics are licensed by the Council for Medically Assisted Reproduction. Egg donation is legal, strictly anonymous, and altruistic (donors compensated only for expenses). Maximum recipient age: 50, with exceptions by committee approval.
Key clinics: Pedieos IVF Center (Nicosia, founded 1986, CAP and FDA accredited), Genesis Clinic (Limassol, in-house genetics lab, ISO/CAP certified, offers a money-back guarantee programme), Cryos IVF Clinic (Nicosia, affiliated with Cryos International sperm bank).
North Cyprus (TRNC)
Not recognised by the EU or any country except Turkey. Governed by its own legislation (Law 57/2014, Regulation 381-2016). The TRNC Ministry of Health licenses clinics and conducts annual unannounced inspections. But there is no HFEA-equivalent regulator, no EU directive compliance requirement, and limited legal recourse under international law if something goes wrong.
What you get in exchange: lower prices, higher age limits (patients treated up to 55 subject to assessment), and a more permissive approach. North Cyprus has historically been the destination for patients seeking treatments restricted in their home countries.
Key clinics: Dunya IVF (Kyrenia), EuroCARE IVF (Nicosia), North Cyprus IVF Centre (Dr. Savas Ozyigit), Cyprus IVF Hospital (Famagusta), Team Miracle / Cyprus IVF Centre.

Who Goes to Cyprus
Data from Cyprus IVF Hospital (North Cyprus, 2022) shows the patient mix:
| Country | % of patients |
|---|---|
| UK & Ireland | 24% |
| Germany | 18% |
| Turkey | 12% |
| Iraq | 12% |
| Kosovo | 10% |
| USA | 6% |
| Switzerland | 3% |
| Israel | 2% |
In 2023, Cyprus IVF Hospital performed 475 treatment cycles. 304 (64%) were egg donation. This ratio tells the story: most international patients come to Cyprus specifically for donor eggs.
Why UK patients choose Cyprus: Donor anonymity (the UK removed anonymous donation in 2005), lower cost (50-70% less than UK private clinics), higher age limits, and 4.5-hour flights from London. North Cyprus clinics like EuroCARE and Team Miracle specifically target British patients with English-language websites and UK patient coordinators.
The Law
Republic of Cyprus (Law 69(I)/2015)
- Egg/sperm donation: Legal, anonymous. Donors compensated for expenses only. Disclosure penalties: up to 7 years imprisonment or EUR 150,000 fine.
- Donor age limits: Women 18-35, men 18-45.
- Surrogacy: Altruistic only. Requires committee and court approval. Commercial surrogacy is a criminal offence (up to 1 year or EUR 50,000 fine).
- Gender selection: Prohibited except for sex-linked genetic conditions.
- Single women: Allowed for IVF and surrogacy (with medical need).
- Same-sex couples: IVF reported available. Surrogacy restricted to heterosexual couples and single women.
North Cyprus (Law 57/2014, Regulation 381-2016)
- Egg/sperm donation: Legal, anonymous. Less formal donor compensation rules than the South.
- Age limits: No statutory maximum for recipients. Clinics assess individually. Some accept patients up to 55. No permit needed under 45, permit required 46+.
- Gender selection: Not allowed for family balancing. Ministry of Health requires MicroSort sperm-sorting technology for any approved gender-related selection, not PGT alone (to avoid discarding embryos of the “unwanted” sex).
- Surrogacy: Available under specific conditions for heterosexual couples where the woman has a medical need.
- ROPA (reciprocal IVF): Not permitted in North Cyprus.
What to Watch Out For
- Regulatory gap in the North. No EU oversight, no HFEA-equivalent, limited legal recourse. Individual practitioners may hold ESHRE memberships, and some labs are ISO-certified, but institutional regulation is thinner than in EU member states. Due diligence on your specific clinic matters more here.
- Gender selection marketing. Some North Cyprus clinics still advertise gender selection prominently. The current legal position is more restricted than the marketing suggests. If gender selection is important to you, confirm the current Ministry of Health rules and which method (MicroSort only, not PGT) before committing.
- Success rate reporting. North Cyprus clinics are not required to report to ESHRE. Success rates are self-reported. Ask for live birth rates by age group. Pedieos (South Cyprus) reports 75% for donor egg, 52% for IVF/ICSI. These are high but not independently audited.
- South Cyprus prices. Major clinics (Pedieos, Genesis) do not publish prices online. You’ll need to contact them directly. Budget 20-40% more than North Cyprus equivalents.
- Travel between North and South. The Green Line divides the island. You can cross between North and South at checkpoints (Nicosia, others). If your accommodation is on the opposite side from your clinic, factor in border crossing time.
Getting There
Larnaca Airport (LCA) serves the Republic of Cyprus. Ercan Airport (ECN) serves North Cyprus (flights via Turkey only, since no country other than Turkey recognises the TRNC). UK patients going to North Cyprus clinics typically fly to Larnaca and cross by land, or fly to Ercan via Istanbul.
Budget 5-7 nights. North Cyprus accommodation is cheap: EUR 30-60/night for a decent hotel. South Cyprus runs EUR 60-120. Nicosia straddles both sides, so if your clinic is in Nicosia you have flexibility.
